The new Transport Canada legislation for recreational drone use is as follows:No drone can fly higher than 90 m above the ground closer than 75 m from buildings, vehicles, vessels, animals, people/crowds, etc. closer than 9 km from the centre of an aerodrome (any airport, heliport, seaplane base or anywhere that aircraft take-off and land) within controlled or restricted airspace at night and in clouds.
The new law is inflexible. For responsible RC enthusiasts, the new law effectively eliminates the use of drones in Canada given that irrespective of where one flies, one is likely to break one or more the rules. The exemption to fly a model aircraft operated at events organized by the Model Aeronautics Association of Canada (MAAC) or at airfields located in a zone administered by MAAC or a MAAC club is simply not practical as there are an insufficient number fields available in any given city that could accommodate the thousands of new model aircraft or drone pilots that are entering this incredible outdoor family friendly hobby. It is important to also note that most new hobbyists are using their quadcopters, hexacopters for photography and videography, and there’s not a lot of interesting content that can be recorded at an empty field.
